Re: A Question For Audio People

Sorry took a while to get around to this. This is the speaker with the dome removed for a look inside :-

This is the speaker with the magnet removed, it's not sticky or anything, no adhesive :-

Here is the cone being pushed with magnet on :-

The working speakers all work like the magnet taken off video

That's your problem. The magnets come unstuck and the centre pole is fouling the voice coil.

Look in the hole. Those rub marks, shouldn't be there. Look at the centre pole on the magnet (the silver post in the middle) thos rub marks around the top, shouldn't be there.

You can probably repair it by reseating the magnet and centre pole.

Clean off the old glue. Get yourself some decent two pack epoxy. A couple of weights. A find a bit of card, say an old greetings card, business card or Rizla packet. Make a former out of the card to sit neatly around the inside of the voice coil. Dry fit the magnet and check the voice coil and former fits over the centre pole. Check the voice coil is able to move by gently pushing the edge from the dome side. The voice coil may be stiff because of the former but it should be free. When you are happy all is well take it apart again. Mix up the epoxy and apply a thin coat to the magnet and speaker basket leaving a gap, say 1/4 inch, around the middle so the epoxy does not spread into the voice coil. Place the speaker dome down on a flat surface. Fit the magnet and centre pole. Puts the wieghts on the middle of the magnet. Leave for 24 hours is a warm dry place.

Let us all know how you get on.

Here is a link to a rubbish speaker repair video but you can see the voice coil being set around 3:40 in.
