APU wont display onboard unless cable unplugged first?

So AMD APU will not boot on gigabyte b450m DS3H motherboard unless i unplug the HDMI cable before starting it, I've tried resetting the motherboard BIOs and it still continues to happen, Bit of an odd one, not sure what would cause it.

Have already gone down the route of installing only 1 stick of ddr4 ram, Have tried a pci-e GPU which when plugged in eliminates this issue completely.

    Thoughts? suggestions?

    Cheers!

Re: APU wont display onboard unless cable unplugged first?

Can you set primary display or disable the PCIe ion BIOS? Nothing else is using the monitor/TV?

EDIT: Two routes in bios, you may have tried them:-

    Peripherals/Initial Display Output
(Note) Specifies the first initiation of the monitor display from the installed PCI Express graphics card or the onboardgraphics.
IGD Video Sets the onboard graphics as the first display.
PCIe 1 Slot Sets the graphics card on the PCIEX16 slot as the first display. (Default)

    Chipset/&Integrated Graphics
(Note)Enables or disables the onboard graphics function.
Auto The BIOS will automatically enable or disable the onboard graphics depending on the graphics card being installed. (Default)
    Forces Enables the onboard graphics.
    Disabled Disables the onboard graphics

CBA to reformat the cut/paste job.

The next step so far that ive been able to produce is if i remove then plug in the hdmi cable. sometimes i will get a display, sometimes i will not.

Im trying to think about what components on the board may cause such an issue, like a improper flash to the bios, but this seem abit far fetched for me as from what i can see the bios is working but something is causing it to glitch.

Has to be the BIOS, the fact you are having issues upgrading it puts up a massive red flag...

I see from a few searches that a lot of people have issues upgrading the BIOSes on these boards, have you tried F2/F3/F4 instead of going strait to the later ones?

Re: APU wont display onboard unless cable unplugged first?

I had fun with friends gigabyte b450 board updating the bios.
have you fully read the notes on the bios support page https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Motherbo...upport-dl-bios

    F50
Note: Before updating BIOS to this new version, you MUST follow the steps as detailed under BIOS F40 discription
    F40
Note: If you are using Q-Flash Utility to update BIOS, make sure you have updated BIOS to F32 before F40.
    F30
Note : Update AMD Chipset Driver 18.50.16.01 or later version before updating to this BIOS.
    the order I did was;

chipset drivers in windows first, - I just use the latest available from AMD
    bios to f30.
    then f32,
    f40,
then f50 (except it was only up to f42 when I did it)

    have fun.

Re: APU wont display onboard unless cable unplugged first?

Its a bit different but my old monitor needed to warm up before it would take an input. By turning on with no input and letting it warm up before inserting the input it worked fine otherwise I got a black screen.

Re: APU wont display onboard unless cable unplugged first?

Have you tried another HDMI cable or different display?

It's possible that a short or bit of stray capacitance in the display or cable is causing the motherboard or PSU to do strange things.

When you have this issue, does the system give any signs that's it's trying to boot (fan spin up, status LEDs etc), or does nothing happen at all when you push the power button? The latter would point to something detecting a short and stopping the system from powering up.

Re: APU wont display onboard unless cable unplugged first?

Right, so ive now updated to the latest bios (what a headache!)

Board still does the exact same thing, pci-e gpu plugged in, no boot problems etc, but take it out and instantly the problem remains, however this time round sometimes it will kick up a fit (1 short 3 quick beep error) which indicates the gpu as an issue, however! again i can get it to work sometimes if i unplug the hdmi, looking for a short i cannot find anything obvious which makes this one an interesting one...

This is a fairly new board might i add, i bought it from scan only last December but i do not want to go down the warranty route without getting a new board in its place. ive had experiences in the past with scans RMAs and it just takes to long.

Re: APU wont display onboard unless cable unplugged first?

    Tried another HDMI cable yet?

I'm thinking a short within the HDMI cable itself rather than on the graphics card or motherboard etc.

I had a problem where a TV wouldn't turn on if a certain HDMI cable was used, but the same cable would work fine with another TV, turns out it was a crap HDMI cable where two pins were shorted internally in one of the connector mouldings.

Tried already, Bit of an odd issue huh? i cannot locate any issue other than this atm, So here is what i have done

Reflashed the bios, all the way upto F50.
Tried 3 HDMI cables, also made sure the mobo was the only item plugged into the monitor.
An external GPU resolves the issue and it does not happen.

So a little lost now o.O
