    Weird shutdown startup problem

    Hi,

Ran into an odd problem and wondered if any one has any clever ideas?

I switched my aging i5 3570k on with the monitor connected via HDMI rather than the usual display port as I'm using my work pc at home in display port. I never got a picture up so in the end held down the power button to force it off. Since then it's behaved very oddly. At times it will switch on but then on shutdown automagically switches back on. At other times it won't switch on at all (for a good day). I've left it unplugged for days. I've switched it off and on at the PSU. I've checked the power switch works with a multi meter. Is it just failing motherboard/PSU? They are both about 8 years old but neither really stressed. I could try resetting the CMOS but that's my last option as I'd lose my OC that has been 100% since build (I know it's still stable as I was benchmarking when it was briefly up).

The crazy thing is I've just started buying bits for a new build. It's as if the thing knows it's being replaced. It would have been nice to have sold it on to cover some of my costs...

    Thanks.

Certainly failing something. Write down the OC settings and then go back to stock and see if that sorts it.

Should that say 'off' instead of 'on' in one of those positions, seems confusing?

Good idea. Just need it to decide to switch on again...

    Re: Weird shutdown startup problem

Is anything else plugged into the monitor?

We have 2 PCs plugged into ours and if PC1 is powered off and then the monitor enters standby it won't turn on for PC2. It will turn on fine when switching PCs before it goes into standby. The only remedy is to remove and plug in the hdmi cable from PC 1 before it will turn on PC2 if that makes any sense.

Thanks for the suggestion but I did try bring the monitor out of stand by when this all started. The screen just never detected a signal on hdmi. It's just got worse since then however with the power issues. When it has worked it's been fine on hdmi.

I could try changing the PSU but worried about killing my new one...

    Re: Weird shutdown startup problem

Turns out I just screwed up. The power button connectors hadn't gone back on the pins quite right. Having disassembled half the case (and therefore improved lighting I could see one of the two pins). Annoying as I remounted that connector 3 times last night just incase I'd done that. Still doesn't explain the monitor not detecting a signal initially (but could be stand by issue domestic_ginger mentioned) or the inability to shutdown the other day but hey if it now works I'm happy. Thanks for the help. Let's hope the new ryzen build goes smoother. I'm way of out practice so it turns out...
