    Other tools that are sometimes useful for isolating encoding issues:
    • Check to see if the View/Text Encoding menu behaves differently on pages that render correctly and incorrectly. The Text Encoding option is greyed out on pages the declare the character set within the HTML.
    • Take a look at Web Developer/Page Source. The lines at the top of the source view can reveal a lot. Does the page declare a DOCTYPE for instance.
    • Take a look at Web Developer/Network and refresh the page. Select the first request in the left pane and take a look at the request and response headers.
    Sorry, yes [BIB] obviously you're not going to suggest that 'create new user / leave your past life behind you!!' is a fix (duh); in any event, no joy. I will look at the other things as I get to it this morning, thanks.

    (I missed this somehow) also, no dice.

    Using my previous 2 examples (Air Mail and Amazon), then as you say, Air Mail text encoding is greyed out, Amazon = Unicode selected.

    Page Source, first few lines of each:

    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html lang="en">
    <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
    <meta name="format-detection" content="telephone=no">
    <title>June 6, 2020 - Air Mail</title>

    <!doctype html><html lang="en-gb" class="a-no-js" data-19ax5a9jf="dingo"><!-- sp:feature:head-start -->
    <head><script>var aPageStart = (new Date()).getTime();</script><meta charset="utf-8"/>

    <script type='text/javascript'>var ue_t0=ue_t0||+new Date();</script>
    <!-- sp:feature:cs-optimization -->
    <meta http-equiv='x-dns-prefetch-control' content='on'>
    <link rel="dns-prefetch" href="https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com">
    <link rel="dns-prefetch" href="https://m.media-amazon.com">
    <link rel="dns-prefetch" href="https://completion.amazon.com">
    <script type='text/javascript'>

    Request & Response is:

    Air Mail: No parameters for this request, and response: response payload (html,body,div,span &c &c)
    Amazon: No parameters for this request, and response: preview, and response payload (<!doctype html> &c.)
    If any of that is useful it's unlikely to be apparent to me I'm afraid.

    Sorry to disrupt the flow again but just had a thought;

    Are you using a custom DNS on PC or Router?
    Similarly are you using a proxy or VPN at any point?

    No to all. If I were, would it be likely to suddenly cause a problem from one update to another..? I haven't done or changed anything since the last update, have never had anything like this before goes without saying.

    I use Simple DNS Crypt and it does cause some weird things whilst browsing at times, but I've gotten used to the idea so I restart the service and it sorts itself out

    Re: Problem with Firefox 77.0.1 update

    So finally, with the advent of 78, I am cured aside of the overlarge urlbar which I had already got shot of once & apparently has overridden previous about:config fixes (anyone?)

    Goodbye Chrome and your ridiculous non scrolling tabs, it's been a loooong few weeks.

    edit: urlbar sorted again, apparently while I was gone they tinkered with the workaround in 77. https://winaero.com/blog/restore-cla...in-firefox-77/

    Re: Problem with Firefox 77.0.1 update

    I spoke too soon.. Foxy 78 has developed some nasty habits of its own, to whit:

    Not loading favicons for tabs from restored session

    Not reloading tabs " " in their proper multi-account container tab

    I thought momentarily that 78.0.2 had fixed this but no. However randomly & improperly I closed browser before this, I have never had either of these problems. Rapidly approaching wit's end with Firefox.

    Re: Problem with Firefox 77.0.1 update

    I have used Firefox for years and whilst I haven't had the issues you have had I am noticed other things in the last few months.

    I have recently reinstalled Windows and due to that have installed Chrome only now, will see how that pans out

    Re: Problem with Firefox 77.0.1 update

    I would be very reluctant to go to Chrome as it would basically be frying pan -> fire. A few niggles here & there are not the end of the world, but both of these are big deals for me - I must have spent more time lately troubleshooting, restoring stuff, reopening stuff, reassigning stuff than actually browsing or accomplishing any stuff on actual said tabs.

    I use none of them so guess it doesn't affect me. Firefox has become more unstable last few months, random crashes and other strangeness. Just couldn't put up with it anymore. And I swear by Firefox normally.

    Re: Problem with Firefox 77.0.1 update.. and beyond

    bump/update just out of interest, in hindsight it seems disabling multi-process may have been some/all of the problem - allowing it has certainly fixed the session not restoring properly issue, I can now restore with favicons & container tabs ok. So now I just get the slowness & the buffering. Happy days
