PC wont boot up when external HDD is on

My computer seems to freeze on the Asus boot up logo whenever my external DVD R/W is turned on :\

    Specs -

    Asus P4C800 Deluxe
    3.4 Prescott
    2GB Corsair XMS Pro LL
    XFX 6800 Ultra

Could it be because I have too many drives? I wouldn't have thoguht so myself but I don't know :\

I have 2 hard drives and 2 internal CD Roms plus the external DVD R/W

Also, whenever the DVD is turned on, under windows I get the "safeley remove hardware" icon, is there a way to just set it up so the pc thinks it's another ide drive?

Thanks for any help in advance

Also.. if I put a game in the external dvd drive and it doesn't auto start, when I click the games icon I get told to insert the cd :\

    You could try:

    1) BIOS settings - check the external drive isn't listed in any of the "boot from" lists, if so, remove it. Also try fiddling with the USB settings - perhaps try disabling/enabling "legacy USB".

    2) Update the drive's firmware. If it doesn't work externally you may need to temporarily hook it up to one to your internal IDE ports.

Also, whenever the DVD is turned on, under windows I get the "safeley remove hardware" icon, is there a way to just set it up so the pc thinks it's another ide drive?
    AFAIK that's not possible.

    What PSU do you have?
