CD?DVD PLAYER DVP-S735D region codes help plz!!!

Hi all i have a DVP-S735D dvd player, when i go to turn it on it says "no disk" even when i have a disk in it, i think it mite be the regions codes are mixed up as i tryed to play a American DVD on it and you all know what sony are like for there dumb protection stuff.
I’ve tried to add the following code 3.1.4.15.9 and the PAUSE button but it did not work!!!!
I’ve been able to get into a service menu were it says the time and date and other info about the DVD player i really do need help as it was a birthday present about 3 years ago any info will be most appreciated as I’m desperate
MY MUM WILL KILL ME!!!!

dvdhelp.com says to change the region do the following ;

put player in standby mode
hold number corresponding to the region you want down for about ten seconds then wait for another ten seconds & press play this should play the region you want. You sometimes have to try it a few times

drawbacks
seems to reset when you turn the machine off
