    Help! Detecting a HDD.

    Echoing this thread:

I've attached an old SATA HDD, which I know works and the first screen isn't recognising that HDD either.

Is it that the mobo is looking for an IDE HDD, and I have to tell it, somehow, that it needs to be looking at a SATA port to see it?

:edit: Tried a different SATA cable. That's not the prob...

If you are doing a fresh install of windows and the windows is pre sp1 then it will not spot the sata drive. You need to get the sata drivers and put them on floppy. Either your mb makers will have them or the hd manufacturer.

Put the floppy in and then on setup for windows press f6 so the drivers are loaded, boot and format from the cd.

I think hes saying that not even in the post screen is it displaying that a hard drive is connected.
The bios at least should display it.
My guess is that you need to enable the sata in bios. I remember on the abit nf7-s you could turn off the sata ports if you didnt want that extra boot time as it searched for sata drives. Look around your bios and see that sata is enabled. Not sata raid.. just that the sata ports are on.

Also remember when you do install windows on a sata drive. You need sata drivers on a floppy to use when windows asks you to press F6 or F2 to install third party hard drive controllers or something. Otherwise im guessing the windows install cd will be unable to see your hard drive in the setup screen.

Kinda a problem when you don't have a floppy disc drive.

as above check the sata ports are enabled in BIOS

check waht the HDD settings are, ie. LBA, AUTO, CHG etc.. try changing those around

you can embed sata drivers into your XP disc using NLite, no need for a floppy ever again
