    Post Fan problem

Nearly every time I turn my PC on I get this annoying grinding (rattling) sound coming from the fan at the back of the case.
I cannot seem to get rid of it
any ideas of what might be causing the problem?
    thanks

    Hi alexsim2005

It sounds like the bearings in the fan. Replacing the fan is proberly the only way to get rid of the annoying sound.

Ok - altough it does go away eventually but it takes about 12 minutes.
I might consider a new fan

    You must have some patience.

If possible get a 120mm fan which give more air flow with less noise than 80mm fans and are quite cheap. You are sure it isn't the CPU fan though?

You could try simply unplugging the rear case fan and seeing if the sound continues when you boot up, you don't need to actually run anything, just hit F1 or DEL or whatever to enter BIOS when the fan is unplugged so your system won't be under any loading whilst the fan is unplugged.

Do not unplug the processors heatsink fan though.
If the rattle goes away when you uplug the case fan, buy a new case fan.
Also, check the graphics card fan and the chipset cooling fan, I've seen a lot of those fail or become noisy.

I get rattles all the time, but then I'm a 40 a day Marlboro man and my computer acts as an air filtration system, cleaning my breathing air by collecting all the nasty cigarette tar on my nice disposable internal fans.

I have to change my case fans after about every 10,000 cigarettes, and I gave up on beige computer cases as they all turned an unattractive magnolia colour.

The other sure fire way to tell which fan is rattling is to take the side off your case and on boot up, momentarily stick your mark 1 finger into the rushing blades of each fan in turn to stop it for just a second. This is also a good way of waking you up if you're nodding off during a long download, but isn't much recommended for extansive testing of processor fans on overclocked Prescott processor.

Oh and if you have one of those 5,000+ RPM 80mm case fans, use someone elses finger. They're vicious.

My fans are noisy too, but I've told them to stop clapping and cheering whenever they see me...
