Audio Cables

Hey guys, i'm not an audiophile so i'm know nothing about audio related stuff.

Basically i got some megaworks 550's and i want to get new speaker cables

I dont really know how to describe them, basically one end is a plug and the other is like a hifi cable, two wires. Can i get any high quality ones from anywhere? and what are they called?

Are you using an analog or digital connection from your PC?

Do they only hiss as you increase the volume? Is it really that loud?

Hey, they hiss when i power the system on, if there is no input from the pc it hisses. Its an analog connection. The hiss is quite annoyin, its louder than my pc, plus its from 5 diff speakers!

Does it not annoy you? I spose i could live with it. But i would prefer the hissing to be gone or at less loud.

There was a lot about it on Creative's forums but they just said it was due to the mains power :/

Mains power does indeed sound like the culprit, buy a good ups (you should already have one really) that does line conditioning, or better speakers.

Hmm, how do they work? Plug it in, then it has plugs for it too? Line conditioning? Can that limit the amount of voltage or just keep a stable voltage through it? And how much should i look to spend for one?

LIne conditioning basically 'cleans the incoming voltage (gets rid of noise in the 50hz signal) that wouldnt be any good because it has no filtering, youll prob be looking into the 150 quid range for a good set up, personally id just live with it

i had an old soundcard that the speakers hissed with...

could that be a cause ??

The hiss is probably 'just' thermal noise induced in amplifiers. Some amplifier manufacturers are 'economical with the truth' when they write the performance figures. If yopu are getting hiss at normal listening levels (and that is subjective anyway!10 then take them back to the su[pplier and change them. All amplifiers will generate noise, and it will be louder at high volume levels. If it is a hum, then it will be mains induced noise, either from poorly designed layout, or poor design.
