I have a logitech wheel mouse whoose cursur automatically mouse horiszontally across the screen with a life of its own even when the mouse (device) is not moving. This happens in windows 98se and windows 2000. please suggest a remedy. Is it a problem with the mouse or can it be caused by a virus.

It can indeed be caused by a virus, I would make this your first priority! Otherwise try a different mouse & see if the problem persists.

if the mouse is doing this on two different computers, then i'd say its likely to be the mouse.

I have a Infocus projector, that has a USB lead, with HID class to provide a back n foward function via its remote (for powerpoint style presentations). This on some computers courses the mouse posistion to "flicker". A badly writen USB definition file by infocus is to blame.

So in short, it can be bad drivers, bad hardware, or malicous software.

It has happened on all 3 O.S's that I have (win 98se,win2k,winxp). I have scanned my pc with Norton 2005 anti virus but found nothing, it had disappeared for a day but resurfaced yesterday. Now it again seems to have disappeared. I dont know if it is really a virus or not. any oyther sugestions will be appreciatd.

    Thank You.

P.S I havent tried this mouse elsewhere. But thew mouse is functioning normally for the time being.

Yes, I have 3 O.S on my home p.c and it was occuring in all 3. However now the mouse seems to be functioning O.K but I dont know for how long will it stay normal and i still dont have a clue as to what is causing it. could be a conflict with another device but how to find that out?

Try using it on a different surface, A clean sheet of paper, card or something. My logictech mouse did the same thing untill I tried it on a card surface. It works fine now
