    Monitor Death

I have an ageing Iiyama 15" tft which seems to have died, the backlight is gone, the monitr displays and is just about viewable if i shine a bright light on the screen but is otherwise kaput. Is this sort of thing fixable? I doubt whether its still in warranty as I bought it 2nd hand a couple of months ago from our very own Directhex so a warranty job is unlikly.

Its my Fiancees montior and she has had min as her assignments are all due this week/next week

Apologies for any spellings or other errors, I can hardly see the text box i am typing in.

Suppose this is the ideal time to break Doom3 out again, won't make too much difference to the gameplay

PS - Yes, I know this is supposed to be at the end, but see if changing the text size larger helps make things more readable. In Firefox, it's Ctrl+Plus.

It is indeed fixable. The hard part is finding somebody that'll fix it, because if you google for "repair lcd backlight UK", there's one dodgy-looking company that keeps popping up, the main identifier being their phone number, 01282 854880, somewhere on the page. They basically bought up a bunch of domains, all of which have similar keyword-spammed pages. Whether or not they're worth your time is another matter. On the other hand, http://www.repairtech.co.uk/ looks to be a reputable company (Yes, I am going solely on the state of the website to determine reputability ). Alternatively, look through the listing on http://www.kellysearch.com/gb-product-30675.html

On the other hand, if you're feeling brave, and assuming it is indeed the bulb, you could buy that and do the replacement yourself. A decent source appears to be http://www.apexlaptops.co.uk/backlight.htm who say £35.00 per 15" LCD bulb.

    Hope you come right. :/

Depends what it is that is broken. If the backlight itself has failed, then the repair cost probably isn't worth it - the backlights are embedded in the panel and so you are looking at a new panel or a complex repair job (that site above looks interesting, but you would have to get the panel apart to get the type and dimesnsions!)

However, if it is the inverter that drives the backlight, you are in with a chance. I can only quote from my own experience with an Elonex monitor, which failed in a similar fashion, except that the backlight would sometimes flash on briefly. The Elonex is a badge engineered Mitac, who were very helpful. They would replace the invertor for £60, but carriage each way was at my expense. Alternatively they would sell me the invertor for about £33, (but if the fault lay elsewhere, it was dead money).. In the end, while I had the thing apart, I noticed that a capacitor on the board was bulging, so for about a pound I replaced it - and it burst into life. I replaced a similar component on another part of the board at the same time 'just in case'.. My particular monitor had two backlights (although I didn't know that until I dismantled it)- the fact that they both failed did indicate the invertor board. If you are adept with a screwdriver and want to take the risk, it might be worth having a quick look inside - with it powered off - and see if anything obvious is amiss. Notwithstanding the site above, I would have thought twice about taking the panel itself apart to replace the lamp.... But then, probably nothing much to lose!

At the costs quoted earlier for the parts, it would be better to just buy a new monitor.
    17" is approx £70 see
