    Exclamation CS:S Lag problems

    OK

When playing Counter Strike, and only when playing counter strike, during play for no reason at all i just lag out completely... on my screen i stop cant move cant fire and then when it decides to allow me to move again my ping shoots up to around 300-500 .
Each time it does this the whole thing lasts from anywhere between 5 and 10 seconds which in most cases leaves me dead and angry...

It varies from server to server too, some of them it is almost a constant thing and thn others it hardly ever happens.

Some people have suggested a command 'cl_interpolate 0/1' but in each of those it does exactly the same thing. I have only x-fire and css on nothing downloading and nothing like msn on.

Does anyone know what could be the problem?

during play: In console type in "netgraph 3". Are you getting any loss, what's your choke like?
Also, what speed connection are you on. We can adjust your rates if your connection's fast enough.

Are you sharing the connection with more than 1 PC ? Is X-Fire downloading anything in the background like a video you want or similar ?

    Please check the following commands in console and tell us what the figures are set as ;

    rate
    cl_cmdrate
    cl_updaterate

Try connecting to a 1/2 decent server such as the NFF server or the Hexus server and see if you are affected by the choke as well.

Lastly, system specs would be nice. I've seen similar issues on a PC which did not even meet "minimum" specs for this game.

He's at work so I'll answer for him...

We've played on all kinds of servers together and while none of the rest of us get lag (we're all on 1Mb NTL cable) he'll be getting it badly. His PC specs are the following:

    AMD64 Sempron 2800+ / 3100+ S754 (not certain which...)
    XFX 6600GT PCI-E
    1GB PC3200 / DDR400 Corsair VS

Well above the 1.2GHz minimum specs for Half Life 2.

ok i'm back... no Lee i dont share my internet, its just on my PC and nope xfire isnt downloading anything in the background. We have actually been on the Hexus server... the lag wasn't as bad there but it still happened but only like once every 20minutes or so, other servers it happens up to 8 or 9 times one after the other so for no reason at all i can just see my guy sliding back n forth reloading my gun between lag.
i'm just about to try those commands i'll brb with teh results.

Is he directly connected to the cable modem, or behind a router? I'm thinking it could be his router shot, or at least an issue of some kind with it. If at all possible, connect straight to the cable modem and see whether that works.

He's straight into the modem via Ethernet (used to be USB until we nagged at him)...

    I'm fresh outta ideas.
