overclocking effects ping :O

right my pc is

an8-sli
opty 144 @2.7
7800 gtx oced
corsair xms 3200 i gig

recently i have had issues with my ping zooming up and down from 40 to 400, i did speed test for my broadband and it was runing full speed, its woreless ntl btw. so i thought it must be pc related so i put cpu and all of that inc ram and voltages, and then reinstalled steam, go in game with sttock speeds and all is fine so i think ok steam was screwed, go bk into bios overclock back to normal 2.7 tighten timings up voltage and go back in my ping is all over the place so no doubt that something i do effects it so right now its all stock but cpu at 2.3 by invreasing fsb only!!
im thinking maybe its the voltages or something effect the wireless card, or is it the ram is unstable any ideas this is very stange! glad its not ntl tohugh

Have you tried increasing the ram voltage? I needed to do that with BF2 to get my overclock stable.

but it never crashed and what not iwas wondering why overclocking could possibly effect ping..

get a network cable in there, dump the wireless for a while and then test.

Get rid of all possible culprits.

PCI wireless or USB? If USB the extra load on the CPU and PSU from overclocking may affect the adapter.

nope it wireless and its pci card, its fine now the cpu has no extra voltage and the ram is stock but when i oc using voltage it screws up

Pings can vary since some routers give them lowest priority (i.e. they have to wait until other outstanding traffic is handled). However in your case, wireless can certainly add far more variability (borderline reception, interference, other network traffic, etc) so replacing it with a cable (even just temporarily) before retesting would be a sensible idea. If your wireless network is not secured properly, then the problem could even be a "neighbour" using your network.

Pings are traffic sensitive - unless he has taken steps to ensure that there is no other traffic on his network, he cannot rule this out as a cause of the problem. And it's a far more plausible explanation to me than overclocking which, if it was done to the extent of causing problems for network cards, would surely also be giving other problems like BSODs.

underclocking back to stock made his ping stable, and overclocking substabtially made it unstable. it wasnt a one off, i was there when he was doing it. It was very blatent...

If this was tested multiple times then it would suggest that overclocking was the cause - thanks for adding this information.

May be your board is overclocking the PCI bus as well, making th NIC running out of sync?

how would i stop such a thing?? i can oc but not touch the volts if i touch the volts things start happening

you need to lock the pci bus at 33mhz
