help with hiper case, s754 and 1u cooler

    Hi,

Can anybody help me. I am in the process of building a htpc with the hipermedia case and an asrock s754 motherboard. I bought this cpu cooler
    http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=21925
as it was the only place i could find it in stock. All was well until i started to fit the cooler. The motherboard seems to have a plastic heatsink holder around the CPU but it doesn't seem big enough for this cooler to fit in. If i remove the plastic holder i can fit the cooler but there is nothing to screw it into.

Have i bought the wrong thing or am i just being thick?

Asrock have a habit of using 4 plastic plugs inside the bracket to fix it to the board whereas most others screw through the 2 holes, through the board & into a backplate.
It looks like with that cooler you would want to remove the bracket & then screw through the holes into a backplate (which the Asrock probably doesn't have but you can buy the bracket & backplate as a pack for~£5 from places like Kustom)

    No, it's 2 part.
1 part is the part that is already fitted to your board (with the prongs) & then under that is a plate - you can see the 2 screws that go down through.
The board gets sandwiched between the 2.

oh, i see now. Shame its out of stock at the moment.

I'm a bit miffed i have to pay an extra £10 (inc delivery) for a little bit of plastic. Loses some of the benifits in buying a cheapo motherboard in the first pkace

    Thanks for all your help

Quite a lot of the aftermarket heatsinks come with a backplate.

Check out the pics of this very similar one from newegg in the US:

that looks like what i'm missing

wouldn't the fact thats its metal mean it would short out some of the contacts on the back of the motherboard?

Depends upon both the board & plate.
If you look at the pic I posted above that one has a pad/gasket between the board & the plate & there is a hole where the back of the socket is.
Also some of the backplates are plastic/nylon etc.

Point is, you might be able to pick up a CPU cooler with a backplate included for less than the £10 Kustom are looking for.
