It would look like thats what is causing the problem from what you've said. Have you got another board to try that cpu with?

Have you had any beeps from the mobo's during all of this?

Although could possibly be the PSU?

Have you tried a bios reset with the new mobo?

Have you got a CPU you can try? Even borrow one?

well my mother works in a collage, and she is going to ask one of the tech's to try it in one of thier systems, they are all p4 pc's, he should have a lot more spare parts to use than me, just have to wait til he gets back to me now.

I didnt think it was the cpu....no beeps, it all starts fine and seems to be booting into windows by the sounds of it all...just a bloody message saying power saving mode on monitor though.....but i have swapped everything but the cpu now, and every other component is working fine, it has to be the cpu, its the only thing left!

No, i am alsways very careful when cleaning pc, its a operation with military like precision. My gigabyte mobo doesnt really have many jumpers on it, doesnt even have one to clear cmos, all leads are in, took it all apart lastnight and rebuilt from scratch with a newer gigabyte mobo, and same problem. i moved house recently, and lost my p4 box etc, as the chip is only 2 yrs old (if it was chip id have 1yr warrenty left on it)....i built my pc 2 yrs ago, not 1 days trouble, cleaned it as always, never had problems before until now. pc'.....who'd have them!!!

was the cpu, one of the pins was ready to drop off.......and about 4 hours ago...did. so there we have it! dont really know how it got damaged, but it has, so now at least i know what the problem was. Thank you to all who replied and offered advice and wisdom, very much appreciated.
