BURNT OUT PSU Qs!

Last night i decided to turn my 4yr old pc off from the wall as opposed to using the pc button on the front. When i turned it on again next day nothing happened and soon realised there was a bad smell of burning! What had happened was the PSU had completely burnt out! Now what i need to know is what is the chance of my components being burnt out also?
Edit: I have got a new PSU (Hiper 550w modular) that i was gonna use for my 1st self build,i think ive managed to install but i am not too sure if i have done it ok The psu is really meant for a sata HD but i have got it too fit my 2 IDE drives "i think" I have plugged it all in and it is working ok but i can still smell burning but that could be the old smell lingering. "I hope"! Are these modular cables only deigned to fit on a certain voltage component or rather can one make a mistake setting one of these up (eg blowing other components):confused Is there a chance my components have survived but only just and are half burntout, or is that not possible?

Just to check I understood you - you blew up your old psu by turning it off at the wall?

Then you removed that one and added a modular psu - sounds fair enuff.

The bit about it being designed for SATA hdds threw me a bit, as long as it has standard 4 pin molexes for you to use, then you can power any device that accepts that type of connector. The SATA connectors are specifically for SATA hdds, just provides the power in a different format (layout of pins - dont ask me why, 1st gen SATA drives had both sets)

On the PSU, the modular cables should be keyed to certain ports, though there may be more than one of them. If it doesn't fit, then you've either got it upside down or its in the wrong socket

Regarding your components, its pretty hard to kill a motherboard/processor, so you should be fine, but hard drives dont like having too many volts put through them. Whats most likely to have happened is that the psu has blown its fuse before anything nasty has happened to your components

Therefore you should be fine plugging the new one in, and yes the smell of "burnt" powersupply will linger for a while - mine did

Ahh Thanks Dave you've put me mind at ease! It all seems to be OK but for a Floppy drive (A) failing at start up. But i was losing that as my new case aint got space for one! I now have both Hds powered on seperate modular cables as i could not double up as i did not have a dual cabel (4 pin molex) would that be a prob? Sorry for the noob Qs! lol!
