My PC Keeps crashing and re-booting.....

I need help with my newly built DDR2 PC.....

In short, it crashes and re-boots itself on a sporadic basis...

I have run diagnostic checks on all the hardware and it seems OK.

It has Norton 2006 loaded and crashes at about the same point everytime, when running a full system scan....

I ran an online scan and got the message "buffer overun detected", which is something to do with the iexplore.exe file?

My system iconsists of:
Intel Dual Core Extreme Edition
ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe
ATI Radeon X1800 XL
TWINX1024-8000UL
250GB Seagate Barracuda
580W Tagan PSU
Nautilus 500 Water Cooler

Can anyone point me in the right dircetion as its starting to get frustrating?

Ditch Norton for a start. No, seriously! If it always happens at the same time then it's likely software. when it reboots do you get any error code in your eventlog?

I agree with the above. Remove nortons. Maybe a clean install of the program would put things right but i would not use Nortons myself. Install AVG instead.

It does not seem to register anything in the event log....

It also crashes when doing mundane stuff, so I dont think its directly linked to Norton...

id say either cpu mobo or ram at fault. get into that bios n make sure theres no silly settings that are wrong, use google 2 help u

its crashin when more resources are being used, so to me, it points to system instability

Try running Memtest (http://www.memtest86.com/) and seeing if that comes up with errors in your RAM, sounds like it could possibly be a problem in that area.

I tend to agree, but cannot find anything that is causing the instability....

All BIOS settings look OK and I have run a diagnostic check on the memory and CPU which came back with no errors...

Does anyone know what the "buffer overun detected" means?

have you actually tried removing norton yet? that thing does more damage than most virii

I would expect at least "EventLog" entries to indicate an unexpected system shutdown occurring, and possibly a "Save Dump" event in the System event log...

Configure the Startup & Recovery options to produce a kernel memory dump and disable the automatic restart so you can capture a bluescreen if it occurs.
If the OS is crashing due to a bugcheck and can be triggered with a full scan then we can look into the dump file (%systemroot%\MEMORY.DMP).

AV has a filter driver as well as the scanning engine, which means it is involved in every single I/O operation, so unless it is uninstalled it can't be ruled out as the root cause.

Thanks for eveyones help, but it seems that it was a problem with the voltage on the DIMM's....

They were set at "auto" and changing them to 2V seems to have cured the instability (for now....)

You think I should have know better!
