    Ubuntu + Win2k Filesystem

    Hey

Is there a filesystem that both Ubuntu and Win2k Pro can access? I want to dual boot for a media centre pc setup and want to be able to access all my movies etc from both OS's.

    Thanks

FAT, and NTFS if you dont mind the support being experimental.

Oh, and FAT32 of course. You can also get windows drivers for Resierfs, but i never had much luck getting it working.

NTFS write support is still hairy. FAT32 (vfat) is the filesystem of choice for sharing between windows & linux

Yup - I use FAT32 (although not that much now) for sharing between the two, reading and writing has been fine.

fat32 is stable, people tend to warn of dire consequences if you write to ntfs from linux.

Then again you could leave the shared partition as ext3 and use something like ext2 IFS: http://www.fs-driver.org/ in win2k to access the ext3 drive.

it depends what size you are using actually, small partitions will need to be fat16 or fat12

Do they? My 512MB pen stick works fine with FAT32 - what sizes require FAT16 or FAT12?

I partitioned the boot drive for Ubuntu as ext3 which was the default, and everything is working fine (even wireless ).

However, I don't know how to access any of my other harddrives. Can Ubuntu see NTFS drives out of the box?

I'm thinking of repartitioning my storage drive as FAT32, but am not sure if this will affect performance. It's a 200gb WD SATAII drive.

try www.ubuntuguide.org for mounting the drives in ubuntu (its instructions for NTFS and FAT32 (vfat) on that page).

Just so you know x86-64 decoding of xvid's is a little fussy under ubuntu.
