I recently bought a Pioneer DV-393 primarily to play XviD encoded avis.
The unit reads these data files without problems but the image doesn't appear to be "smooth".
Is this normal? Maybe there's an easy solution?
Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry but I'm bit confused. So which isn't smooth, video playback or image quality?
There's a problem with the Pioneer players and DivX/ Xvid playback. Do a search on AVforums where there's a lot of info about it. I don't think there's anything that can be done at this moment.

One of the more advanced functions of XVid, which most encodes use, is not something that low end decoder chips support very well. This problem is not just confined to Pioneer DVD players.
Edit - Just remembered - It's the packed bitstream function.
Thanks.
With the 'packed bitstream' removed the files play perfectly on my DV-393.
3 questions:
a) What is the benefit/purpose of 'packed bitstream'?
b) Does the DV-393 have a "low end decoder chip"?
c) Do all DivX DVD players have this problem?
Many thanks!
Packed bitstream allows better compression, hence improving picture quality
It definitely does not have a high end decoder chip for under £100
The high end Denon etc are reported not to have this problem
OK, the packed bitstream is mean to improve playback and remove jerkiness. It changes the frame order of the AVI to improve seeking and playback.
Its not a part of the mpeg4 spec, so many decoder chips dont have support for it.
Players using the Mediatek MT1389 chipset with the latest firmware (depends on manufacturer obviously) now support packed bitstreams without issue.
