Reapiring Windows XP Component Services?

Anyone know of a way to fix this without reinstalling Windows?

Not sure how its got mangled but I cannot even open the Component Services MMC without getting spammed with errors, plus a few applications that depend on it will not start.

Might be worth trying a repair from your original xp cd.

What kind of errors are we talking about here? Is it logging on as the local system account?

I presume its logging in as localsystem but TBH, I didn't check (haven't tried changing anything).

The issues I am getting are applications like Sandra refusing to run, and when you launch component services and click on the "Component Services" tree, I get the error "Unable to start the COMUID.DLL Server! DLL May be damaged or not registered...."

Trying to register or unregister the DLL just hits an error.

Don't really want to reinstall (including a repair from CD!)

looks to me like a repair install in that case - if you can't reregister the DLL then something is majorly screwed. What error do you get when trying to reregister it?

EDIT - just to be sure do you have http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en installed?

I let windows install all updates via automatic updates, so yes I will have that (or anything that has superceeded it) installed.
