usb to ethernet

Hello, i have a Alcatel 330 usb modem, and my computer has ethernet ports, my internet connection speed is 2.2mbps with my usb modem, i had checked my ethernet ports and my computer tells me it is running at (or can run at) 400mbps. I am presently on Orange broadband and was told my internet can run upto 8mbps but with my usb modem runs at 2.2mbps. BT did a line check and say that my max internet speed is 6.5mbps. So can i change my modem to an ethernet one?, and if so, will it increase my internet speed?.
Sorry if this sounds confusing but would like to use the max i can get out of my internet connection.

This modem can run at 8mbps because I used to use one before my router. Just FYI.

Thanks. decided to change ISP, rang for a MAC code, got put through to customer services, it's amazing what they will give you if you tell them your going to another ISP. So saved £5 a month on previous option, getting full bandwidth (told this would be 7mbps at least) and wireless modem.
