Boot configuration problem?

Hey

Long story short:

Formatted hard drive and installed Vista
Found out VideoStudio wouldn't capture video through Vista
Bought 80Gb HDD and installed Win XP and Video Studio on it
Got my work done then went to boot into Vista...

So, if I go to my BIOS boot menu and choose my Vista drive it go straight to the XP drive and loads XP.

If I unplug my XP drive and try to boot into Vista I get this:



Any ideas on how I can fix this so I can:

1) get back into Vista
2) have it so I can use both of the drives?

I've got Partition Magic 8 if that'll help me.

Have I got this right? You had a C: drive with Vista on it. You then added another drive and made it the C: drive and put XP on it and the original C: drive was now drive D:. You then removed the Xp drive and made the Vista drive C: again and it won't boot?

You've screwed things up by messing with the boot partition. Would suggest you backup your data, then repair install XP, then repair install the Vista install, leaving both drives in. this should then let you use the Vista bootloader.

Vista is C: then the other drive with XP on it is L:. The drive letters have never changed.

Even thought the XP install works fine? Would repairing Vista do it?

Aha - just re-read you original post. XP has overwritten the Vista bootloader, a repair install of Vista should sort that. Failing that http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 may be of use to you...

Does it need to be run from Vista?

Essentially you need to replace the XP boot.ini with the Vista bootloader - the repair option really ought to sort it. Having downloaded EasyBCD and installed it it seems that it replaces the XP bootloader with it's own custom version, which you should be able to point at any OS on your machine from within XP.

I got an error when I tried to run that in XP. I'll try a repair, but will that see that there's an install of XP on another drive?

it should, however I just thought - you have PM8. Boot from the PM cd and install bootmagic - that should see both partitions. This WILL replace your current XP bootloader though

I'll give it a whirl - I think I'll try repairing Vista first though. Might wait until my video project is finished at the weekend - I don't want to risk not being able to get into XP
