first suggestion would be to make sure only essential hardware is installed, single stick of ram, CPU and hard drive, optical drive, gfx card then try to build, make sure any additional periperals such as printers, soundcards etc are not plugged in

also do a cmos reset and set bios to optimised defaults and change only those options you need to ensure the build progresses, i.e. boot order.

Other than that has this build worked before (hardware and XP) or is this a new setup you have, helps to direct our suggestions

Does the XP disc have SP1 or SP2 installed? If not, you might want to slipstream a new XP disc with SP2 on it.

    disc is sp2
once it has installed windows files and has to reboot to install
windows proper it just hangs on screen that lets you press del
    to enter bios

that doesnt sound like a windows problem, if it hangs pre-post then there has to be a hardware issue, as for why this does not affect ubuntu I cannot comment, it just sounds weird. I heard of this with old systems around the time of Win98 release where some mobos required a bios update to fix but that was bloody ages ago *hangs head in confusion*

If you're looking for a new S939 board, you'd better be quick - they've all but disappeared from the market.

Not so much a case of what would I recommend, but what can you get your hands on.

Strange indeed, I would have asked what sata ports you are using as each set of 2 uses a different controller, but as you are able to install windows, bit of non runner. The neo 2 are great boards but have a shed load of quirks. They are picky with ram also, what slots did you use. Your hardware would also be helpful

I'd run your RAM through MemTest if you haven't already. Sounds like something's a bit dodgy there.
