DVD Combo Drive NOT reading CDs

Hello All

As the title says really. Been doing a reinstall from scratch and noticed that my DVD drive doesnt seem to read CDs now.... but is fine reading DVDs.

I've attempted to boot with a CD and it doesnt seem to read at all, but boots fine with a DVD...

Any ideas why? Is there any way to determine if its a hardware or software problem?

BTW the drive is fine in device manager and is still on DMA mode, but cant really figure it out. Is it time to fork out for another drive?

Show hidden devices and see if you've got any copy protection drivers interfering with things.

Check for new firmware as well.

drive is dead.

optical drives die. combo drives have one or other capability die.

If it cant boot from a CD, nor read CD's in windows, its dead as Jo says.
They are very cheap anyway. Chuck it out and buy a new one

Yeah I was thinking that too - i know its not expensive, but this NEC 3540 has lasted a good while and just wanted to ask if there was any other option before heading to scan...

Could just cleaning the len's, and make sure you have tried more than one CD, otherwise, off to Scan
