I agree with above I can't see how this could possibly be powered over USB, even using two ports it would struggle surely? Be interesting to see a review of it, can't imagine its all that amazing screen quality though.

The video doesn't show any Y-splitter and clearly implies a single port. I call WITCHCRAFT! Entered though - hoping to take it into the office to prove a point as they are refusing to give me second monitor due to my workstations integrated graphics not supporting it.

You only have to look at laptop monitors which are well down into single-figure power draw, they're just designed with more attention paid to efficiency. I'd still like to know how it works on the data side of things though, USB isn't exactly high bitrate compared to display interfaces.

Re: Win a Philips Simplicity with USB monitor

I've found a review of this, or at least something similar: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/s...-221su-review/

As I suspected, it can't really cope with video so it's limited to non-graphical apps really. If the review is right about 10W power consumption, they're at about four times the spec if it uses a single port, or double if it uses a Y cable, and I expect it wouldn't have a way to negotiate power draw at all on the second port. This can and will cause problems on some systems, especially some laptops, from failing to power it up to triggering a system reset as the motherboard may think the port has been shorted (I've seen this happen with some 2.5" USB HDDs, and they're less than 10W even at spinup).
