Stiffer penalties from tomorrow for using a phone while driving

The penalty for using a phone while driving increases from tomorrow - Tuesday Feb 27. There will now be a fine of £60, rather than £30, plus three penalty points added to your license.

This has been a HEXUS public-service notice, courtesy of dwf.

I wonder when they are going to step up with other "crimes" and increasing their penalties...

I don't mind this- its the only way I'm going to get points though so I will have to be extra careful

Or just get a handsfree kit and keep your attention on the road?

It seems that there is a worry correlation between people who don't see me (on the motorbike) and those who were using a phone at the time.

I have a hands free kit - however if you look the the deeper rules it involves no contact with the phone whatsoever.

Yea, set your phone to auto answer. Problem solved.

Either that, or pull over when you need to make a call...

I think a much stronger detterent would be the phone being confiscated.

Think about all those phone junkies who feel like they've lost a limb even when it's just their battery thats gone

I saw on top gear a few weeks ago that you now can't adjust your radio whilest driving. Does that include steering wheel or stalk mounted controls I wonder?

Technically, its anything that distracts you from driving.

Changing a CD is as hazardous as taking your eyes off the road to answer your phone...

If only life was that simple - anyway I will find a fix

I was just about to post the same thing, I think you are right - I'd say thats far more of a headache than a fine or penalty points, infact take it to my local station and hand me a producer - 24 hours + without a phone can be a right PITA

Indeed - I've got controls for everything on my wheel - phone/radio/cruise control/satnav - but I am still concerned about what I can do

So why don't people get pulled over for smoking when driving?

Good to this new law. This will hopefully remove some of the crazy Chelsea tracker driving 4x4 school run mums from the road as I see loads driving while talking on their mobiles every morning while taking Johnny and Lisa to school. Fingers crossed this will remove some of the white van men and posing boy racers.

Using a phone whilst driving would of fallen under 'due care and attention' before the previous legislation was introduced. Now we have _stronger_ legislation.

    How does this help?

Er.. not a lot. What's the point without _enforcement_ ? Without more policing this law will have NIL EFFECT on all those people I see every single day glued to their mobile phone whilst driving.

    Pathetic.

"I was scratching my ear" and I'd like to see them prove otherwise.

Anyway we've got speed cameras instead of police on the roads nowadays, theres very little risk of being pulled over for anything!

Just thought I'd add our car kit + headset sales have gone up about 600% this month!

Yeah. They are all too busy investingating racism in 5 year olds or other easy targets.

Anyway, when you do see what you think is a police officer walking down the road it's not actually a real 'copper' but one of the community support officers instead.
