THis is brilliant news IMO.
The wii has so much potential and I think a lot of the big companies are afraid to try things too out there. Wii ware is a good idea but still from what I`ve read its expensive so if there is a way that normal people can hack together games then it can only be good for the console as maybe some of the big companies will see what is possible with the hardware and make truly inovative games and not just mini game collections
Sounds more like a disaster to me. Limited software takeup wll be even less thanks to all of the copied software that these hacks are usually used for.
Not around too often!
The thing you have to remember though is that the large part of the wii installed base are casual gamers. These people are not likely to find out about the hacks so wont be affected by it.
The people who will know about it maybe a lot will use it for nefarious gains but if it allows people to fully exploit the possivbilities of the control scheme then imo it can only be a good thing
Not quite sure I understand it, even after reading the linked article, but does this basically mean you can run stuff without any hardware mods?
Yeah.
They have cracked the encryption in place atm.
I know this is kind of off topic... but what happened with Wii Ware? Will I be able to develop games with it?
How easy is it to develop stuff with homebrew kits, or whatever this will open up to me (if I were to 'hack' it)
Sadly I can only see this leading to people modding there wii consoles and running pirated games instead of buying them from the high street. Which is a shame because there are some great games out there like Excite Truck for instance. A lot of people I know with modded consoles in the past did exactly that, I seemed to the only one who wanted to explore the enhanced media side of a chipped console
The majority of people wont use it though.
As with any console there are people who use chipped ones but there are still a far larger amount who buy the games,
Wii-ware is still coming although from what i`ve read its not being aimed at the bedroom codes more small indy developers and still costs to license
Cheers Kopite,
I have to admit, if the license cost isn't too much, I'd be very tempted to try and make a game.
