That's pretty much how I'd answer TheAnimus' question. HDDVD was always the more polished, "finished" format. Sony don't care about the consumers, they don't care if we have to beta-test their products for them. They just pay money to win. If it weren't for the PS3, Bluray would be nowhere near as popular.

Bluray disks arent' region free either. Which is utterly pointless. And the Java menus are crap. Oh and they cost more to manufacturer too

The thing I do like about them is the often better audio formats you'll find on the disks. TrueHD isn't nearly as popular on HD-DVD disks as DTS HD Master Audio and Uncompressed multichannel PCM is on Bluray disks. And the next-gen audio is what I love about HD

Microsoft can bring out a BluRay add-on for the 360, and everybodies happy.
    Is that likely to happen?

The same could be said for HD-DVD. They both have their own backers, and some sit in both camps.

Yeah they are contributers but Sony was the initial spark to get Blu-ray off the ground, along with Philips and I think Pioneer also had a big role to play during the very early years of development. From what I've read Sony also control the majority of the Blu-ray Disk producing factories too .

Ahh but the crux is, Toshiba are the only one to manufacture the HD-DVD player. (Excluding dual players) Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp all make Blu-Ray players.

Why do we need optical disks though?

We have digital distribution, and if that's not good enough, you can almost fit the same content into a card the size of a postage stamp.

Internet is too slow and bandwidth is too expensive. A single HD-DVD/BluRay title would max out most peoples monthly download limits.

Flash memory is too expensive. An optical disk takes a few pence to manufacture in quantity. have you seen the price of 32GB flash cards?

There is some lower-tier company's like Venturer who make them too, so they are not alone, although granted BR does have more.

No one has ever been able to explain to me why HD-DVD movies cost the same as BD movies, and why BD-R is cheaper per GB than HD-DVDR. So that means one of two things: HD-DVD is not as cheap enough to manufacture to make a practical difference (i.e. it's propaganda from HD-DVD that people took it as fact) or the HD-Camp were being greedy and decided not to pass on the savings (unlikely considering that they did so for the hardware, but anyway) or the BD camp is subsidising a good of the cost (works for me if they want to do that).

I didn't actually expect that this war would end with a clear winner. But now that it looks like we have one winner on the high-definition category, I think that it is possible for the high definition to eventually replace DVDs. DVD didn't have any competition other than VCR (and VCD in Asia) when it was released, and it wasn't always as cheap as it is now (carries some premium over VCR/VCD just as HD/BD has now).

To be honest, Compact-Disc was developed in part by Sony, and I don't really see many complaints. Perhaps not all their formats have been winners (I prefer SD over MS, but I also prefer MS over xD), but perhaps it's not to say that all their formats are inferior.
