Hopefully some places might start doing pre-orders in the next few weeks then, and we can get some idea on final pricing. At £300 its losing some of its appeal, and you can already get a vastly more powerful laptop for a shade under £300.

You know, you've reminded me about cars there.
Some people like the idea of driving in a small car ("green", easy to park etc), but the practicality of good space. So each generation a particular car gets bigger, and soon enough it's the size of the next category up (see VW Golf as an example which used to be their smallest car). Cue a new 'small' model to come in and fill it's place.

It makes me laugh as I've just read an article on PCPro titles MSI to release EeePC killer. The article is pretty short and reading it I thought the specs look good and then it says at the end the retail will be between £300-£600 depending on the model. Doesn't that just defeat the original point of the EeePC to create and sell a cheap and portable laptop. I can see this side of the market being destroyed as each laptop maker tries to out do each other with addon's and better specs. Before you know it they will just be releasing normal sized laptops with flash storage...
Previously to get something the size and weight of an Eee, you needed something along the lines of the Sony TZ series, but then you are talking about £1500. Granted it is a lot higher spec, but some just want the portable size and generous battery life.
In the next few months it will become less about the tiny cost, and more about size, weight and bettery life. There will be a pont where you can either spend £500 on a normal laptop and get 2 hours out of a back breaking monster, so spend £500 on something that will last you 4 hours and be small and light enough to pretty much carry wherever you take a ruck sack or shoulder bag.
Personally I'd rather spend a little more to get a lot more features. However I really don't want to carry a nromal laptop around with me. I have two of them already (three including the one at work) and they are horrible to carry for an extended period. Never mind trying to stick to a single hand carry bag on EasyJet for a weekend away
I agree with most of that but I think price is very important. Lets be honest I don't think there would be all this fuss if the EeePC wasn't cheap regardless of it's specs as it would be just another generic laptop. It's special because it gets the right balance between spec, size and price just about right. There are ultraportable laptops out there for people who want to spend a lot and like you I have 2 full size laptops and just wanted an EeePC to take on the train when travelling and surfing the net in bed. I love my eee, it was so cheap and I use it everywhere. I like this version too and if the price is right I may fork out more.
Will see when more subs are released.
Need a review to compare all subs side by side.
Started out as being a great value sub, but gradually the price increased.
Think there's too much hype surrounding the EEE!

Does anyone know if they will still ship the eee pc 900 with the 20gb SSD that comes with Linux with the Win XP drivers if you want to swap over?
The 701 models came with linux as standard and they put the cd with win xp drivers in the package. Just wondering if they would do that with the new 900 model with the 20gb SSD linux model.
once it's out the internet will be flooded with xp drivers if you don't get them with the Linux version so it really will make no odds.
