Personally I quite like i7, its kinda punchy without being over the top. I just wonder about the "future proof" nature of the name though... What comes next i8..... Hmmmmm I can just see the t shirts now... i8 intel

Ummm... without wanting to sound too condescending, isn't intel spelled with an "i"? Even the typeface on the logo matches.

I agree though that 7 is rather a random and uninformative choice. It would be nice if the naming convention somehow allowed consumers to differentiate how powerful the chip was in relation to other models from the company. When comparing PCs from different brands, you have to be a bit of a geek these days to know which one is more powerful.

i7 sounds cool... 'i' being for Intel and '7' for it being their seventh processer... it makes perfect sense?

I had assumed the same thing, their main (desktop) line is in it's sixth generation making this their seventh.

Pentium I, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4, (although that was a pretty abrupt name change to me, since I'm someone who has to keep detailed inventory of a great deal of computers) then Pentium D,(5th gen.) which went straight into Core 2 Duo.

If you think there's a bit of a gap there, there IS such a thing as the Intel Core processor, but it was notebook only, so as far as desktops go, the "Core" line up only gave us one generation.

    Till now.

Pentium D WAS just two 4s glued together wasnt it? its hardly another generation, if thats what they are claiming then surely the C2Q is another generation on the C2D?

What about all the really old 32bit CPUs prior to pentium?

Re: Headlines - Why did Intel choose i7?

Why “i7” you ask? Well, we can guess what it *isn’t* - it is definitely not the seventh-generation Intel architecture (that would be the Netbust marchitecture). It could be, however, that Intel discovered some sort of Haxor dialect and they’re actually saying “Core it” – or their product code just tripped the 80777 number - but I’m just grasping at straws here. Seven is considered to be unlucky, sad or tragic in China, tho’…
from an inq article last week..
