I reckon if every phone came with a usb cable to charge it would be a step in the right direction. Plug it into a PC or a power adapter. Most people I know, who have had phone for 10+ years, have an amazing collection of chargers. It is crazy for each supplier to have their own type of charger connection - usb seems like a good standard to utilise.

i agree, i have tons of old chargers! a standardised connection for all new mobiles is a good idea, if i had a phone with just a usb cable i was buy a usb to ac adaptor anyway and i doubt it would get charged much on the computer!

the only thing i find annoying about USB chargers is when they are limited to 500mA. Just because thats all you will get from a PC, doesn't mean you need to limit yourself to that when you are converting it straight from the mains.

I have a car USB power adapter that charges things like my Archos a lot faster than anything else becasue it can pump out a lot more current when it needs to.

This has to be the dumbest idea i've ever heard. First, Nokia assumes you have already been a Nokia customer in the past.

If not? "Welcome to the world of Nokia, now that you have spent money on one of our mobiles (contract-subsidised or otherwise), hows about spending some more money to make the thing work! Thank-you loyal customer"

What a load of opportunistic bulls***! This ain't being green, this is just reducing their costs!

Re: News - Nokia begins no-charger trial in an effort to keep green

This is a god awful idea and if all handsets doing this it is rubbish.

It is basically encouraging people to stay with the same handset manufacturer (assuming same spec for charger) unless a universal charger for all phones comes about.

It also renders the act of selling on your old handset to reclaim some money.

And finally it also encourages the use of 3rd party chargers which iirc invalidate your warranty with the company/manufacturer.

So for us consumers it seems like a lose-lose situation, and just a blatant cash in on going "green" whereas it is basically lining their own pockets. How much of each handset actually goes to the WWF? 1.25% is utterly ridiculous. Actually try to do something useful rather than something like this, as making a box smaller just means another run of boxes to be made, more waste (dependant on the input size i guess) and I can only negates the overall eco/green theme!

I just hope that new handsets don't start being sold with the option to get a charger with it, where you have to pay a £10 premium...

    Utter rubbish!

best thing is the box the nokia comes in wont change and if you havent got a charger you have to go and buy 1 in a another box/packaging. Plus with all nokia phones dont use the same chargers so overall its only adding waste

It would help if Nokia chargers lasted longer than 6 months. Last Nokia phone I had the charger died after 6 months use.

fair enough assume the worst, but what if ...
What if all the handset come with a usb lead for charging and there is only one type of mains charger irrespective of company/manufacturer?

Not sure about the green credentials of this particular handset, but I assume the £4 donation is the cost (wholesale) of the charger.
