Well we've had it for 2 years, we switched from Telewest to BT as soon as we found out we could get it, after checking at least every month for years. All this while a street about a hundred yards down the road had had it for several years already. Then of course was the way we only got full speed rather than ~1.1mbit about 6 months ago.

So yeah, I exaggerate, but still not fast by any means.

Re: News - BT names 29 super-fast broadband locations

If I were you, I wouldn't get too hung up on waiting for this to get to you then. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure FTTC will be deployed only where it is commercially viable. There won't be a push for it to be a universally available service. Having siad that, in some situations, it may actually make broadband more viable for some areas, but that would depend on the ease of installing the fibre and the configuration of the exchange and the street cabinet.

Once 21CN is up and running, things could well change a lot too.

    Is Cardiff even an exchange?
I've only found "Cardiff Empire".... hopefully it means they are doing all the exchanges in Cardiff!

Great, the places that don't really need it get it first, but the places which can barely get 1meg get stuff all again..

Bah. Hopefully my exchange will get upgraded fairly quickly as it's one of the largest single exchanges in the country, and I'm only a stones thrown from the cab

Re: News - BT names 29 super-fast broadband locations

The thing i have noticed about broadband, especially round here, is that whilst we get pretty good speeds (very very close to the 10mb which is stated, say like 9.8 on good times) congestion at peak hours kills it but its not due to the switch necessarily its the servers and such in the local exchange which are just not powerful enough for all the simultaneous throughput. Maybe that's just virgin... or maybe my understanding is just skewed i dunno.

Re: News - BT names 29 super-fast broadband locations

Going have to be aggressively priced. I currently get 14Mbps for £21.50 from Be*. So, unless a good and fair price plan is announced I won't be interested. And considering BT will be looking to re-coup the money they spent, it's not gonna happen.

Re: News - BT names 29 super-fast broadband locations

Well I'm covered, which is great because I like right on the edge of the range for getting ADSL in the first place. Hopefully having the fibre in place will mean I get a more stable connection.

Of course, the risk here is that if you're using part of the BT network, does the Phorm network come into play and starts stealing your data.

    How thick are you guys?

They've barely covered 5% of London.

    Its not a roll out.

Think about it, what do you want? You want some exchanges in densily populated areas, you want some with long distances etc. There are thousands of exchanges in this country, and you moan that they missed urs out! You don't hear me moaning that if i lived 1 mile away i'd be on it do you?

Have some perspective, they will of picked locations because of the consumer patterns, and the technologies and wiring been used. Bloody cry babies.

As well as: space in the exchange, ease of installing the new equipment in the exchange, configuration of the cabinets, ease of installing the equipment in the cabinets, ease of running the fibre to the cabinet.

Although I would imagine they won't have picked all the easy ones, what would be the point of that when they'll want to test out the procedures and the equipment? There will be a large mix of different installation scenarios covered in that list of 29 exchanges, giving their engineers some good experience of what they are likely to find in other parts of the country.
