Or consumers are going to have to realise that they can't get the world for £2.50 and a box of smarties. Bandwith costs someone either they pay for it with their broadband or they pay for it in subscriptions to other services.

Granted, the backhaul cost of broadband does need to come down, and this is down to BT and the other data carriers.

BT need to pull their finger out and get on with sorting FTTH (hell even fibre to the street would be nice) instead of scraping the copper barrel...

I remember that rediculous report offcom did where they stated our current system was 'enough' for x years... its not even enough now

Re: News - BBC to roll out iPlayer HD

The way ISPs offer their products and the ADSL infrastructure are two seperate issues. Caps have nothing to do with available bandwidth.

Right now, if we had FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet, which is far, far more likely than FTTH), all that would ahppen is you would hit your cap quicker.... or have to actually pay realistic money for your service.

This has been the complaint about the 50mbit service from Virgin. Also you get that high, and they only way to take advantage of it is to use P2P software. A single server, even a huge MS download server can't keep up with that.

Re: News - BBC to roll out iPlayer HD

Caps do have something to do with available bandwidth, yes you pay for more bandwidth but if there was no caps for anyone then the infrastucure would end up massively clogged up at most ours of the day. Once the limits imposed by copper cable are lifted then all it takes is one clever ISP to make its caps more reasonable and they will all have to jump on the badwagon or they will lose business.

Re: News - BBC to roll out iPlayer HD

But that isn't a problem with using copper. It's the cost of the backend infrastructure that is holding back ISPs and making them introduce caps. Plus of course the general race to the bottom that the british public seem to love so much. Tiscali is a prime example.

It won't be a clever ISP, it will be a dumb one. Without rasing the cost of that available bandwidth as they raise their caps, they will loose money and go out of business. It's the back haul that costs the most.

It's probably only "not enough" because of piracy though to be fair.

There was a news article recently about Swedens internet traffic dropping by about 33% when they imposed new laws on downloading copyright material.

Makes you wonder how bad the UK fares in that regard.

Re: News - BBC to roll out iPlayer HD

It's not going to be enough for me until I have a bugger load of 1080p television channels coming down a fibre wire and into my TV.

Re: News - BBC to roll out iPlayer HD

My PS3 struggles with normal "High Quality" full screen, I have to run it zoomed in. Does anyone else get this issue?

Re: News - BBC to roll out iPlayer HD

Thread may be a bit old but I've finally found something worth watching on iPlayer HD. Might be 720p but it still looks crisp and clear when resized to 1920x1200.

Anyone else spotted any other (decent) programmes in HD on iPlayer?

Being implemented quicker than I thought which is good
