We have an A3 Fujitsu scanner in use for precisely the reasons noted and it's been damned effective.

Yep I agree with this guy. I've got an ancient Epson Perfection 640U hooked up to Nuance Paperport and it's a reasonable system. Let's me keep PDF copies of my business expense claims, plus bills for some of the suppliers (great for checking back that they've not made a 'mistake' )

Even grabbed birth certificates etc, because it's handy to be able to send a PDF with a job application etc, rather than a paper copy or, worse still, the original. And because they're PDF-MRC's they're widely readable plus easy to bung onto a CD/DVD to stow in a relative's house as a backup copy.
