Re: News - Nero offers freeware CD/DVD burning software

I have been using Nero happily for years... That said I have never paid for a copy, having been given free copies with CD/DVD writers and motherboards. I have always found the versions I have used 4,5,7,8 to be fine and never had a problem with them.

Indeed. It's the way many toolbars, including but limited to Ask, are 'marketed' that annoys me. As far as I'm concerned, it often amounts to deceit, and as a result, I will not install Ask under any circumstances. If that means forgoing a free app like this, okay. If it was a paid app I needed, and it could be deselected, I might put up with it, but only if there was absolutely no choice in using that app. If (as here) there's a perfectly good alternative, then alternative it is.

It's not Nero I object to. It's Ask, and I'm disappointed that Nero chose to go this way. More fool them, IMHO. It might raise revenue short term, but it costs a lot of goodwill long term. As a long-term user of paid Nero, though not having upgraded recently, this will make me re-evaluate using the paid version. I've got some of my machines on free tools as it is. It looks like the rest will go that way now.

Not that I expect Nero to notice or much care if I do it .... but if enough people did???

Honestly, it's not that hard to flick through the install screens and deselect randomware you don't want. I agree it's a little sneaky, but it is something you have to put up with nowadays. Daemon Tools uses the same method, I would switch but I haven't found a good, free quick alternative for mounting.

Hell, even when installing the Flash Plugin, it wants you to install the Google Toolbar. Everyone is at it!

I'd imagine that it's due to opt-in nature of the installers. The assumption is, that the user wants the additional crap.

Adobe's use in the Flash Player installer is more acceptable to me since I'm asked before I download. I'm not sure of this Nero offering, but judging by the filesize, I'd guess you're downloading regardless of whether you want it or not.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

Nero is even flagged by some AV as adware because of this. I bought Ashampoo 7 a while ago which does everything I need on Windows. Brasero and Gnome Baker are great on Linux. I like the way iso recording is now included in Windows 7.

    +1 this.

I bought Nero 6 back in the day, and it got a lot of use for a year or so...

But nowadays I just make audio and data discs, and Burrrn is quite adequate for quickly burning Cuesheets for the former, CDBurnerXP for the latter.

Nice to see that Ahead are FINALLY making this gesture though.

Nero is a steaming pile of excrement, full stop - I finally stopped using it altogether when version (whatever-it-was) installed that horrible Scout thing without so much as a by-your-leave, which had to be manually dug out of the Registry in order to get rid of it.

There are many more capable, less bloated freeware apps, and I can't see why anyone would want Nero as a gift let alone pay for the godawful thing.

In case there is any remaining doubt, I am not a lover of Nero...

The only part of Nero I like is Nero Burning ROM... but that's not included in the express versions or I doubt the free version... I think I will try ImgBurn and CDBurnerXP thanks to the recommendations in this thread Thanks guys

I downloaded it and tried it but it doesn't really offer that much.

Will carry on using Deepburner as that has loads of stuff it can do.

Heh - I've never actually bought Nero - I've always got it free with some PC hardware (probably Motherboard or Graphics Card). It's the main one that I use and I find it adequate for the tasks i require of it. It seems better than alot of other ones I've tried.

Well, "evil" isn't a word I'd use, but it does use a series of techniques that offend me. I regard it as deception. For a start, the "bait and switch" technique where a user thinks they're getting free smileys or something similar, but what they actually get is the Ask toolbar. Another thing is the way it rearranges browser toolbars to give itself prominence, If I want my browser rearranged, I'll do it myself, not expect some some tool to change the default layout. There are a number of other issues, but I just don't like the way they do business. One commentator, Ben Edelman, has done a lot of work on Ask and the way it's marketed, His articles make interesting reading, and he comes up with one analogy that I find apt, and it describes what it is that offends me about Ask.

Suppose you get a knock on the door. When you answer the door, someone tells you you've won a competition and a holiday. You invite them in, only to find they're actually there to sell you encyclopaedias, and if you order you go in a draw to win a holiday. I don't know about you, but if someone used that kind of deception to trick their way into my home, I'm going to be annoyed, and I'm annoyed when people try to use the same techniques to trick their way onto my computer.

I'm not saying that this is what Nero are doing, but it's the nature of the people they've chosen to do business with that disappoints me. I had though better of Nero than that.

Oh, and by the way, that method of selling encyclopaedias won't work on me. I don't buy things from unsolicited door-to-door sellers. Ever. Well, almost never. There's been ONE exception, and that was Sky .... but only because I'd decided I was interested before they knocked, and they just happened to time an approach very well, when I was researching it anyway. Other than that, I don't care who it is or what they're flogging, or how good they claim the offer is - I'm not interested in even hearing the offer and they certainly don't get an invitation in.

Re: News - Nero offers freeware CD/DVD burning software

I do like Nero 8 for making my own DVD's. Creating menus is a doddle compared to others I have tried. Until some makes a DVD creating pack that can do most file types and have menu templates and ease of use to change them, then I am sticking with Nero 8.
