A short SATA cable and some double sided sticky pads and you could fit 6 of them quite happily to the inside top of a tiny case

You know what'd be awesome? If Windows 7 came on something like that, so you could just chuck one into your PC and voila, a short install to find appropriate drivers and you're up and running.

Why would you need Office on a HTPC?

You wouldn't particularly need it, but I'll be building an HTPC in a couple of months' time and hence have thought about things like this. Whilst I have no interest in bloating it out, I have a spare Office license and it's always nice to have the option to open the odd word document or excel spreadsheet to have a look through them, whether I'm on the sofa or at my desk - I use them a fair bit to keep track of important information.

Point is, as a complete install, I can't imagine many people would want much more than two additional apps (including, in my case, Office), so you don't need a particularly big drive to boot from.

Maybe it's a side effect of only just having finished at 6th form, no PC seems complete without the ability to read over 100 years of history in note form, create a 30 minute guide to carbon nanotubes with lots of nice pictures, and generate hundreds of graphs explaining the relationship between copper ion concentrations and a random variable.

I agree for an HTPC this would be ideal for an OS and media centre (or other media management software). If it only blocks ports either side, you will be able to use the other 2 or 3 ports for HDDs, BluRay Drives etc. If you could fit a slimmed down copy of Vista or 7 on the SSD then it lends itself to being great for HTPCs or small formfactors.
