Anything that puts draconian restrictions on what can be written, forces a dev to pay money for every application they wish to deploy, EVEN IF ITS FREE, is a direct threat to my industry, and my ideological free market economic beliefs.

In England we have done away with most nepotistical practices because they are very unfair to the worker, despite what santa claus and others here think about me, this is something I care about. Having a total control would be like going back to the union run industry days. Good luck getting a job as a docker 60 years ago if you weren't a union due paying man!

It often anoys me when people buy 'fair trade' its a brand, its not to say that anything which isn't 'fair trade' branded is evil, and that 'fair trade' brand is good (its not always, but thats a different rant). However, I don't know how anyone can defend the "my channel only" attitude, its reprehensible, and you all deserve to be mocked, accused of listening to coldplay, and voting for the nazis.

Sorry, but this had to be done....

And, LOL, I just noticed this part of the article:

...and if looks could kill, it sounds like the iPhone 4.0 might just have some Android powered offerings in its sights
If this is the actual design, it looks far more bland and subdued than its predecessor!

So if looks could kill, it would get its ass kicked by many other phones

Its not the language or toolset that is my complaint thou. (otherwise I start saying how its just a fancy pants smalltalk)

Its the business model of having a total control of the supply chain.

    Two questions:

    1. Was this a staged leak, does anyone think? "Whoops, I've dropped my phone. AHEM. I'VE DROPPED MY PHONE" *points at seat* *looks around* *leaves bar*

    2. If NOT a staged leak, has the guy in question
    a) been quietly killed and buried in concrete piling somewhere
    b) been given the rollocking of his life
    c) been told "ah, well, it happens. Nevermind".
    d) been fired. Possibly into space.

I'd like to think C, given what I know of Apple, but the cynic in me thinks a or d

It's the first Apple product i've ever liked the look of (I don't buy into the whole "sexy" BS that their products are supposed to be, they're not sexy at all). The case style is a lot like the old Toshiba Gigabeats, even down to the little round buttons on the side, which could take a heck of a lot of punishment.
Shame i've got a Desire...o wait, there's more to it than the case and the rest of it sucks so not a shame afterall.

I've done a bit of development for BB, iPhone and Android and it's Android > BB > iPhone for me.

It might not be for you. Great! Save your money, or spend it on whatever float your boat. That's my take for the GTX480, stamp collecting, and a whole loads of things. Very few products are suitable for everyone.

But at least some people seem to care about what others buy. Whether it is those who buy something because all their friends have one, or those who intentionally avoid something certain things because
'everyone else' have one, you can't deny that at least some people have shown that attitude..

Which I don't get. And to me, as bad as one another.

@TheAnimus: I guess you are not a big fan of the XBox Live! either then. Not sure about charging developers for deployment, but I am quite sure that they do need to go through a process where they are approved first. Actually, that probably goes for consoles in general.

Frankly speaking, as a consumer I just look at what the device allows me to do what I want to do. That basically mean, does it have the applications I want, and can the hardware handle those applications. Sure it's nice to see what the hardware -can- do, and all things being equal, I will go for the better hardware in a given price bracket. However, all else are not quite equal right now. I do not need all iPhone apps ported on Android phones/WinPhone, just the ones I regularly use (or a better alternative). I certainly wouldn't mind doing without the hassle of jailbreaking (one of the application I regularly use is only available on Cydia - not even sure if the developer sent it to Apple for approval). But so far, only one of two applications (the aforementioned), is available on the Android platform.

And that YT link has been taken down by Channel 4.

Styling reminds me of a Nokia, particularly the N78... making it rather last decade...

Good chance that is not the real design but just a prototyping case for testing, easier to make in small runs but has the same insides as the final product? Cos it don't look very Appley to me at all - not girly/yuppy-slime/estate-agent enough by a long way.

I think that's why I like it After seeing this I was considering buying an OEM iPhone shell & attempting to steampunk it to then pop my 3G internals into, don't think I have the patience though! If they sold shells like the '4G' then I'd certainly buy one as (IMO) it looks much nicer

    WTF

Any marketplace now has approval, difference is Google/MS have clear guidelines to what is required, Apple dont. You can also host on a 3rd party site with a non iphone app currently

It goes for any official marketplace in general

Not to mention the price difference in submissions, the free distribution alternatives....

But yes, one of the reasons why the best games in the world, ever, have always been on the PC is how it has such low cost sales channel.

^ Well, I was referring to the quote below, which made no note of that (or at least wasn't clear with 'draconian' as sole adjective).

I'll concede that developers may have their valid reasons to prefer one platform over another, but as a consumer (and most people are consumers), I still think it should come down to whether the device has the hardware and software to do what -I- need.

If the other platforms are indeed less restrictive and better to develop on, then I would expect that developers would jump ship or support both platforms. While it might be the logical/expected move, I am only willing to bet on what's available at the time of the purchase, rather than what may happen.

In the same way that if I know an industry employs bad tactics, such as only employing certain race or union members, or forcing child labour, I generally boycott it, this is due to my morality.

For this, apple are the same, its moral choice, I don't like the business practice, I won't give them my money.
(this is of course subject to it not been "enough" better, if it cost only £5 and performed orally then hell my morals can go hang)

Which is why I distribute via OpenMarket as it's free, only signed up to WM Marketplace as I can submit for free as a student or it's $99 per submission, free or not. Still $99 per submission even if declined so an app that is declined then accepted would cost $198
