You can add Sony Ericsson X10 users to that list of long suffering users waiting for an update. Still on 1.6 with 2.1 due out end of Q3 (which is now but no mention of it for last 3 months by SE since annocement was made). 2.2 is expected never to see the light of day on it - so much for a flagship product!

Anyway good news for android 2.2 users!
Yay - a fellow X10 owner! You're wrong on the 'no mention' btw, SE-ES said week 38 (i.e. this week) whereas SE-UK said anytime within the next two weeks.
2.2 position is more debateable - SE haven't said it's not coming next year, but they're being stupidly coy about current deployment plans. Many, many folks - me included - have said that if they don't do 2.2 then they're effectively dead in the water as far as 'droid is concerned. Certainly no way that they'll be the '#1 in Android phones' that their CEO has stated. And that's ignoring the fact that if they do drop 2.2 plans then they'll be about as popular as Steve Jobs at an Adobe conference with the current X10 owners.
Stupid damned Google - how difficult would it have been to use API level 4 rather than 8?! At least then they'd be able to get nearly all the current devices. Heck, use API 3 and get all of them.
On the upside, I'm heartened to hear that we might get out-of-band updates from Google (unless they're 2.2-specific of course). The current update process is a shoddy mess (google->phone makers->teleco's->poor-users) and they could really do with taking a leaf outta Apple's book and deliver direct.
By the way - typo alert - "Gmail Mobile updates no longer lied to Android releases"
still no froyo for my desire, nice going o2! i think i have to switch to CM at this rate...
