Re: News - Hitachi releases 3TB HDDs with SATA 6Gbps

Don't forget, can't use them with a conventional BIOS - has to be EFI/UEFI.

In addition to the standard PC disk partition scheme, which uses a Master boot record (MBR), EFI adds support for a new partitioning scheme: GUID Partition Table (GPT). GPT does not suffer from many of the limitations of MBR. In particular, the MBR limits on the number and size of disk partitions (up to 4 partitions per disk, up to 2.2 TB per partition) are relaxed. GPT allows for a maximum disk and partition size of 9.4 ZB (9.4 x 10^21 bytes). The EFI specification does not prescribe any particular file system. The only Microsoft Windows versions that can boot from disks larger than 2.2 TB, are 64-bit Windows Vista/7 and Windows Server 2008 and later.

Also, "use" != "boot from", so there is still scope for use of these disks in legacy systems.

Work or be able to boot from on a BIOS based PC?

so this would be fine as a storage drive in an old pc that boots from another drive?

is that the same with some of the other 2tb drives like the WD EARS model do you know? it's getting confusing these days

at the current prices, with 2tb drives near the £65 mark, i think i'd wait till 3tb drives come closer to the £100 price range

Re: News - Hitachi releases 3TB HDDs with SATA 6Gbps

If you use a partitioning scheme that creates a hybrid MBR next to the GPT, you'll also be able to boot from a partition on those drives. Only caveat: this partition has to start and end before the 32bit-boundary and actually it would help if it was the first partition on the disk...

    Hybrid MBR means:
    - you have a complete GPT partition table
    - you have a socalled protective MBR right next to it
    - your boot partition is listed inside the protective MBR
    - one GPT Partition is listed in the mbr, covering the rest of the disk
    Hardware mods:
    # they void your warranty
    # they may seem to work, but kill your machine later on
    # they are mostly unneeded, because the engineers who built a machine knew what they were doing...
