It is actually an intresting move because its away from the In Car Entertainment, towards the base function of a car, something to take you from A to B.
Obviously a fondle slab would be better, but thats probably going to be reserved for VW beetle owners.

Microsoft-car is actually very popular in the US on the cars
Ford uses Sync based on Win CE
Hyundai recently announced they were adding it to their cars too for the ICE/navigation needs
Like a lot of MS products it's not really an international product, just like Mediaroom in terms of popularity
Let me see.
Software that crashes.
Cars without brakes.
Can anyone see where this is heading?

Actually that is a good example of in car integration issues.
my favourate comment there is someone who is telling the person above thatShows just how little they understand. If an application hangs or otherwise misbehaves, the OS should handle terminating that without requiring a system reboot.
The in-car system right now is a distributed mess, it is dependent on a whole host of different parts, sensors that are working directly on the canbus etc, when something goes wrong, when the watchdog timer hasn't been cleared you have to reset pretty much everything. Its the old issue of the symptom not being the cause.
What they really need to do is to integrate more of the parts into single system components, or have clearer dependency trees with their modularity.
But this is hard, the idea of the canbus was to make wiring simpler, but also reduce cost. Making a truly all new system would be damned expensive.
Given the few % this is happening too, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a hardware fault, but lets not forget we put man on the moon with failing hardware (there is an excellent article I read a few years back that the space program demanded only 99.9% of components to function, just think how many were not!) so it should be on to the car designers to have the redundancy have the desgin able to properly show up the failing component. All whilst keeping the cost competitive obviously.
