I've said it before and I'll say it again.

One of the main featuers of chromebooks is that they can utilise old, cheap hardware because all of the processing is done in the cloud. This was supposed to bring the price down (<£200) and allow mass sales.

Except that's simply not true, as many of the apps make heavy use of flash and / or HTML5 which puts a strain on the local subsystem to render the pages. After all, it's basically just Chrome browser sitting on top of a minimal linux install. It still needs to be powerful enough to render modern web applications; and when you're talking about flash too, that pushes the bar even higher. if you're going to go back to old hardware that can handle that load, you're going back to more power hungry systems that will have very restricted battery lives.

So no, commercial chromebooks are not going to be using mobile Athlons and Pentium Ms. Simply not viable.

You are correct, however when they were first announced and people went - "well, what's the point", that was one of the primary responses.

If they aren't cheap, they won't sell in large numbers because they aren't a full OS and even regular users want a full OS (to a certain extent).

So they used an Atom which uses a GMA3150 IGP which does not support flash acceleration.

    FAILbook is MEGA FAIL!!

Is Samsung trying to kill off Chrome OS even before it has a chance??

Re: News - Samsung Series 5 Chromebook

I know some of us whinge at Apple but at least in the recent past they bother to actually match up their hardware and software properly. Too many companies rush out mis-matched systems and it is not a wonder Apple does so well at times.

I cannot understand what Google and Samsung were smoking when they conjured this up?? How did this even pass the design stage?? The main reason Zacate has done well is because it can actually DECODE video and flash reasonably well. The main reason that Atom netbooks failed was because they could NOT DECODE video and flash well since Intel were being cheapskates. The whole point Ion existed was because the Atom IGP was pile of a reheated Moose droppings. At least they should have added a decoder of some sort or gone with a CULV design.

    First impressions count.
