Agreed with the sentiments on police procedure. One thing that we should be careful about is making the procedure too difficult to the point where Police are uninterested in truly dangerous scenarios for fear of getting sued. It's one thing to allow them to get away with unreasonable force, but another to stop them from preventing possible harm to themselves or others.

This is an interesting way of looking at the problem with guns> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDAPtQpUMXQ

Spot-on! The ex-police "talking head" on BBC Breakfast this morning (Monday) said that - commanders were hesitant to go in with "suits and boots" in case - with the "benefit" of 8 months review of the CCTV footage - they were subsequently adjudged to be guilty of "excessive force" and held personally responsible.

IMHO, the whole things a mess - on one hand we've to stop the murder of innocents like that newspaper seller who got beaten to the ground and subsequently died, but whilst still allowing the police to give thugs a (well-deserved) damned good thrashing. Apologies if this is a bit Daily Express for some. Just don't get me started on the "it's all down to poverty..." tripe that gets trotted out.

Veering off-topic - 7.62mm v's 5.56mm. According to the many progs on Discovery channels, part of the drive for the smaller calibre was that less powder needed = less recoil = more accuracy. Also an interesting interview with Eugene Stoner where he was pointing out that these days the engagements are closer up - so there's no need for the long ranged "big" ammo. Needless to say, Mikhail Klashnikov was interviewed and was very dismissive of the "toy" bullets - if memory serves, something about the advantages of being able to shot through light cover. Note, the switch to smaller calibre has nothing to do with trying to wound rather than kill, (which obviously is more of a strain on the opposing army - wounded have to be treated, whereas dead can just be buried), but for more pragmatic reasons - each grunt can carry more bullets, have a lighter gun that is more accurate.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

The argument about recoil is slightly skewed - this was more the guns than the bullets themselves. The old M14 was a problem due to the barrel+chamber being vertically out-of-line with the stock of the rifle. The resultant forces when the bullet is fired are out-of-line inducing a resultant moment and causing the rifle to kick on firing. The result is that in Korea the fire rate was affected both in terms of accuracy and in time between shots due to having to realign on the target. This is a similar problem with pretty well all pistols, revolvers and the like.

The M16 was developed in response to this - and it has the butt directly behind the chamber. The recoil goes straight back into the shoulder in line with the bullet firing forwards. A far more accurate rifle.

Kalashnikov argued most fighting would take place over 300m range or less and set about creating a rifle that would be best for that distance. Its high rate of fire is at the expense of range, since it recycles some of the firing energy to load and fire the next bullet. A small bullet at higher velocity vs a heavier bullet at lower velocity... impact force (and penetration) depends on both factors.

    This is horrendously off-topic.. apologies.
