Re: News - Internet porn block measures will "protect our children"

"A handful of other reports, however, suggest that the new measure could actually involve opting-out of porn rather than opting-in"

This seems to me to be the way a filter should work - opt-in guidelines supported by the major ISP's which allow users to opt-in to content filters.

Re: News - Internet porn block measures will "protect our children"

So, presuming when you opt in..
Who wants to put money on your details being mined somewhere along the line and your data then passed onto a 3rd party...
You opted out of the filtering therefor you must be a dirty pervert..

How long will it be before all these "do gooders" realise that the more they interfere the worse things get, granted so its done with the best intentions (or so they tell us) but how often does it actually go down that way..

As said above, good news for bad/negligent/unaware/disconnected parents..
Hows about in 5 or so years time when some parent tries to sue the ISP/Government because there child saw something on the internet that they then copied and led to someone being killed/whatever...

    palm, and face..

Which is a moral issue, not a legal one.

And, as every sane person knows, morals vary from person to person and are best left to the individual concerned, rather than some group of nutters trying to force their views on everyone else.

As much as I agree with your sentiment you leave the door open for advertising to do what ever it pleases regardless of it's impact on our culture. I don't feel that is an acceptable situation to advocate and thus must disagree with your proposal.

We should be allowed to have as much autonomy as possible but I support restrictions on corporations and business from doing as they please, especially when those restrictions allow me to choose not to have degrading adverts view-able on TV.

Unfortunately governments tend to focus on restricting citizens and not business, which is the opposite of what they should do.

It is one thing for companies to force "morally unacceptable" things on people, but quite another for "moral nutters" to prevent private individuals in private environments from doing things that are only morally, not legally, wrong.

Advertisers, magazines, TV programs and films should not be allowed to do some things, but not solely because they are morally objectionable to some.

Its made worse by the fact that it is the "moral" objections of the "shrill and hysterical" that end up being forced on everyone else.

    Exactly, the focus is wrong.

Re: News - Internet porn block measures will "protect our children"

Whilst I agree with the concept of an ISP adult-content filter being made available, I disagree with it's mandatory "opt-in" approach. You know what's coming after this, "terrorist" sites will be restricted, followed by any media sites that disagree with the government line.

The fact that no ISP has gone "hang on, let's market a child-safe service", surely must indicate how unpopular this idea is? Otherwise they'd have been trying to make money off it by now!

I agree, completely. Which is why government should stay well out of the business of moralising, and laws shouldn't be forced upon citizens by the morality police.

At best, the government should work with ISPs to develop a consistent optional service for fascist parents. If they want to screw up their own kids they should go right ahead.

I think thats the exact reason, they dont want to be seen to make money from it.

I mean, how much flack would an ISP take for trying to charge £5 a month to "protect your family from bad stuff"?

That said, Talk Talk are currently gibbering on about their "free HomeSafe protection" offered with their broadband products. It is, wisely, opt-in and at least being gateway end means that the spawnlings will have a harder job trying to circumvent it.

What ISP-end filtering means, of course is that Daddy won't be able to look at his 'cuddling' sites when Mummy takes the kids away for the weekend...
