Re: News - New focus on Xbox as Entertainment Hub

hmm - maybe i should spend more time with the xbox trying to set this up.
my nas (netgear readynas duo) works fine with the ps3 (everything is connected to my broadband router via cat5) but i remember when i tried to play movies thru the xbox, it couldn't play the files (95% of my movies on my nas are mpg - so ps3 can play them)

i couldn't even play this 1080p version on the xbox and the file is mp4 and i remember myps3 couldn't play this neither.

Didn't have much of a problem streaming from the MBWE - but you need your NAS to be acting as a media server (DLNA?). If you want to check whether its the files that your using that are the problem you could also bung a couple on a flash drive and plug that in. I certainly remember being able to stream iPod-compatible MP4's to the XBox, (although I'll give that a check after the dashboard update).

You could always post a question on the forums here - there's usually someone with the same setup as you that can help.

Excuse my nosiness - but what's the problem with the XBox and those files? Does it give some kind of error message when you try and select them; just return immediately when you try and play them; or just not show them?

Also came across an interesting comment on http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=881199, namely:
Got it working. Apparently the readynas takes about 45 minutes for it to fully scan the network to make ReadyDLNA connections. wish that was documented somewhere.
Same here with the MBWE, it takes about 15 minutes from startup to become fully available - in this case it's really confusing because you see some content, but not others! Back to the ReadyNAS, there's also a couple of applicable threads on readynas.com that might be helpful.

I must admit I do prefer the new layout but I don't think I'd ever sell my ps3, but that's just personal preference I guess.

I'm less certain - I guess that they figured that the extra content they're adding means that the old scheme would be overly complex, (I'll not disagree). And I also see the point that some of this can be driven by "touch" (via Kinect, hence the quotes), so it makes a kind of sense to use their "standard" UI that's designed for that interaction.

Totally unimpressed with the level of Kinect integration - I'd hoped for a lot more control, e.g. being able to eject a disk by voice. And as for the Bing search, I've never managed to get it to do anything meaningful, it's just wasted space as far as I'm concerned.

Final criticism is that it looks like the new layout is more bloated than the old - at least because it's now taking longer to exit from a game back to the dashboard.
