For the record, my last three cards have been AMD, so I'm hardly an Nvidia fanboy, but when a mid-high-end chip can beat a flagship chip, there's a problem there. That Nvidia hasn't produced the GK110-based card speaks less about Nvidia and more about AMD, as Nvidia simply didn't need to get that out the door without the real competition.

Nonsense. These chips have been in development for years and are the stage that they would be at regardless of how the competition performs. Nvidia is laughably far behind where the money matters - where is the competition to the 7700 and 7800's? They have none.

We already know that the 7870 with 28 CU's would be enough to overtake the 680 (the 7970 has 32 CU's so that tells it's own story) while still being a smaller and less power hungry chip. Sure the gap has closed and Kepler is good, but Nvidia basically did a complete U-turn by giving up on DP and making it a pure "gamer" card. They had to pull out all the stops but are still losing to the 7870 on perf/area and perf/watt.

New GTX 690 looks awesome but with a $999 price tag it is way out of my price range and means I will be looking at either a 7970 and maybe the 680 if I can get one for sub £400

Especially considering $999 will probably translate into ~£900, since $499 of the 680 translates into £450.

It's already been revealed as the dual-GPU 690.

It seems to have around 10% lower clockspeeds than a GTX680 for the core.

Considering even the single-GPU 680 is still almost constantly out of stock everywhere, I don't fancy people's chances of getting a 690 any time soon!
