Re: News - Intel cuts corners on Ivy Bridge Thermal Interface Material (TIM)

I keep thinking about doing it but at £170? Even if I did do it without breaking the chip and got -20c, the extra headroom over the 4.4Ghz I am at now would be pretty much unnoticeable outside of benchmarks.

And if you remove the IHS.....it might as well stay removed. There are plenty of coolers with retention systems that work with IHS-less CPUs.

It's the global economic downturn. The increased prices of copper and tin. Pick any reason you like; but the sales figures will surely take a hit from this?

    Old Skool!!

OTH,I still remember the old AMD CPUs like the Athlon XP CPUs which were naked. You had to be careful when installing the CPU!!

This seems the most likely explanation. It may well be 'fixed' in future iterations.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    Hmmm.

I wonder what Intel will do, given the bad press that it is getting for this, especially from overclockers.

Hopefully they will drop the price of the Core i7 3770K to £100 until they get a new version out...I wish!!

They go to the effort of rendering their highish end chips unsuitable for extreme overclocking to force people to spend even more money on the K series, then they go and use inferior TIM on those top end chips? Surely they can't have this both ways!?!

Considered this myself, but then also considered that more effort could have gone into a better choice of TIM if solder was a no go.

OTH,remember some of the better TIM is harder to apply,so during mass production it might easier for them to use the thinner ones.

However, this still does change the current state of IB for overclockers,as a Core i5 2500K can be had for less.

I wonder the same as I'm saving pennies for i5-K and new MOBO to upgrade sometime Q4 but I dont like the the fact these chips running hotter than SB one bit.
Hopefully they'll look into it along with new stepping. If not, my 750 3.3Ghz still kicking well

already been done, in regards to the story there are conflicting reports it works/does not. Personally I think after IHS removal they are either getting good contact or not. I recall getting a skt 939 x2 3800 nekid and having to lodge a 50p under the lock lever of my ac64 heatsink.

and hexus I posted the Japanese link earlier http://forums.hexus.net/cpus/240021-...ml#post2445925

If you think it's report worthy, send a direct message! You can also do 'contact the author' in the report.
