Re: Features - QOTW: What's the worst PC component you ever bought?

I've been quite lucky with my hardware purchases over the years, however a friend of mine once owned a MrEthernet, this network card was so troublesome he eventually ripped it from his machine, took it outside, and then set fire to it.

I've tried to find some information about the Mr product line, but its existence seems to have been removed from the internet. They were popular during the 90's, in my area at least.

The floppy disk was around for decades! I've still got one now. The Zip drive however came and went in the blink of an eye.

It's good that it's lasted this long tbh, you're running a bit of a tightrope there

Thing is, any PSU can blow on any day. The question is, does it wipe out the rest of your PC whilst it's at it? With these, it seems, the answer is yes. If you've got really expensive components attached to it I would definitely bring it up the list, if it wouldn't be too horrific to see them go, then no big deal.

the 4gb drive died twice (failed, then warranty replacement drive also failed) the 13GB failed and got warranty replaced too.

skip forwards a few years: Had been reading consistently good reviews of seagate drives so thought i'd give them a second chance. Brought a raid card and 3x 500gb seagate drives. Drives were the loudest i'd heard in years, 2 of the 3 drives failed within a year.

skip forwards again to recently: gave them another go for a hybrid SSD drive, drive failed after a year and a half

In the same timeframe, i've only had one hdd from another manufacturer have any problems (maxtor drive that whilst had some bad sectors, still worked fine for many years)

    On a performance/driver basis: my first ever PC's motherboard + a creative 3d card
The board was terrrible, but the onboard graphics on the motherboard stood out for amazing crapness... Software rendering was many times faster than hardware-accelerated mode for quake2 on the SIS chipset for example
As the motherboard had only PCI slots, i upgraded to a PCI creative S3 savage4 card... which is where i learnt of creative's reputation for terrible driver support

Combined the two were a complete nightmare, but did teach me a lot about PC troubleshooting. This helped me get an IT helpdesk job later on so it's not all bad
Used Seagate drives, many of them. All have been fine. Also Hitachi, WD and Maxtor. Got rid of the WD, but due to its age more than anything. The Hitachis have lasted years, as have my older Seagates
and my newer Seagates are performing seriously well. You must have just got a dud mate. As for the hybrid - yeah those were crippled from the start, numerous firmware upgrades but they couldn't solve the issues at the time presumably as a result of the same problems early SSDs had.

When I looked at getting the 7200.12 I was seriously fussy about noise - the Seagate was the second best performer for speed (just behind the Samsung F3) but by far the quietest in a series of reviews. Really happy with it.

These were 7200.10 drives, looks like it was bad luck on my part choosing a dud version of the drives
a quick googling gives reviews like these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000FS9DP0

I bought a wifi card that didn't have any drivers for windows 7 (checked online as well). Still being sold by retailers though.

Certainly my OCZ Vertex 2. What a crock - mine failed so whilst waiting for RMA borrowed one from work. Which failed.
Will be sold as soon as it arrives so I can get a Sammy 830. It was a cracking buy at the time, don't get me wrong, the performance over HDD was amazing. But it's no good when it's bricked.
    Moo.

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the worst PC component you ever bought?

Mine was probably a pair of Seagate 1TB drives. Both were identically faulty and failed in a slow and annoyingly intermittent way that had me chasing faults all over the place and generally pulling my hair out. What was particularly frustrating was that I swapped one of the drives out for the other spare one in order to diagnose the fault, only to see the same intermittent problems, thus leading me to the conclusion that the first drive had not been the problem. Never has a component wasted more of my time.

I can only assume that the courier had drop-kicked them all the way to my front door, making them both damaged in the same way. So so annoying.

cheap RAM I bought on eBay once. I think it was called Supertalent. it was about 10% cheaper than branded and gave me so many random BSODs...never again falling for cheap RAM even in budget builds.

there always enough money to get at least Kingston ValueRAM.

To be fair, they were around for a few years and you could even get laptop bay Zip drives. The Jaz drive on the other hand, didn't linger around for that long. I, of course, plumped for the SyQuest SparQ. That was a cack decision. Even flakier than the Zip drives. Thank God I thought better of trying the Castlewood Orb.

I did spend an extra tenner or so on an LS-120 floppy drive for a build many moons ago, and to this day I've never owned (or even seen) an LS-120 diskette.

A very over-hyped Iwill mobo a dozen or more years ago. Bought several for friends on the strength of amazing reviews and only one lasted more than a year. Also, surprisingly, a Shuttle barebones that arrived DOA (psu) and its replacement that blew up (also psu) when powered and took out a mobo for good measure. Nice!

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the worst PC component you ever bought?

A looooong time ago I was the proud owner of an AMD Athlon XP 3000+, a variant with a 400MHz FSB. At the time it was a BEAST, but was seriously unlucky with mobos for it! EPoX EP-8RDA : good but it was a basic, with no SATA ports model> Sold it. Then it was an ABiT AN7, great, but onboard LAN never aquired IP adress, then it was sold (with a PCI NIC bundled ).

Then it was THE WORST: ASUSTeK A7V880 motherboard... Put me off ASUS motherboards for A LONG TIME! ASUS Support once told me my CPU didn't existed (it was rare, but it existed, ASUS A7N8X mobo detected it) I was pissed, the mobo was EXPENSIVE and with every other BIOS update it was unstable: Sold the damn thing after a couple of months and bought a ABIT NF7-S mobo: Still going strong today, upgraded to the top of the range CPU (AMD Athlon XP 3200+) and my kid plays a lot of Need for Speed Underground on it!

Some old Shuttle Spacewalker mainboard, 'twas long ways back, most likely when some 233MHz Intel was a true beast. That horror of an mb decided to start a career of sizzling and smoking electrical mayhem after a few months of use. Another abomination was Okia's 250W ATX power supply, a _FEW_ years ago, it became a molten lump of noxiousness after two months of erratic life.

Lian Li PC7B Case. No matter what I do, it rattles all the time! I have come to loath it and will be repalcing it soon.
