I don't know why people seem to think that, they are undeniably some of the best performing drives on the market, look on MyCE forums (formerly CD Freaks). The only real problem, if you can call it that, is the delayed eject mechanism, which isn't unique to Sony drives - some LiteOn drives use the same mechanism.
