The UK court simply ruled that the Samsung design is sufficiently different from the regsitered Apple one to not legally infringe on it. And that's all the court has jurisdication to rule on: whether Samsung has acted legally. Which in this case they have.
And if we're talking about innovative design, I have one thing to say. TC1100. A rectangle with round corners and a touch screen is *not* a new idea.
