News - Elite to be remade by original author via Kickstarter project

I like the idea, butttttt I do see Eve as being the successor to Elite and Frontier.

To one half of the game perhaps - the trade aspect. The combat is not the same at all - Eve goes for a nicely implemented strategic system that's more like Homeworld. Elite games put you in the pilot's position rather than more like someone just directing the action.

I feel like I'm the only person alive who thought Doomdark's Revenge was better than LoM...

DR (not Mr Ross!) definitely added more of a diplomatic element to the original game.

Freelancer was a pretty good Elite'ish experience as well

Just downloaded...and Wow!

There are some nice add-ons for Oolite as well. Everything from shaders for space stations and ships to x-wings and tie fighters. I chose to stick as close to the original as possible, but did add a hud add-on that turned my target cross a different colour when aimed at a ship.

Pledged my £20 the moment I saw this on the Beeb yesterday morning. Frontier took up such a large portion of my teenage life. Can easily see a new Elite doing similar.

For anyone looking for a nice little filler whilst this is in development, you do a lot worse than Pioneer - which is heavily based on Frontier, written from scratch.

There's two very good signs in this Kickstarter:

1) David Braben has publicly acknowledged that his control system in Frontier was massively borked and detracted from the game. We're going back to something less physically realistic but more playable. Good stuff

2) He had the good grace to give a call out to Ian Bell in the opening paragraph.

I'm pretty sure Frontier Studios owns all the trademarks relative to the original Elite nowadays, but it'd still be fascinating to know what Ian Bell thinks of this...

Ian has been relatively vocal on his feelings towards David and all things Elite in the past. Not sure he would in anyway give a damn about this to be honest

I first played Elite on the BBC B, but really got into it play on the Atari ST.

I tried play Frontiers but it was ghastly. I tried Oolite but never really gelled with it, but with the news it got me itching to play again. Downloaded Steem and boot it up last night. Already Poor.
